Vulnicura (2015)
Björk continues to amaze us with the release of the VR trailer for “Family” — one of the ethereal tracks from her 2015 album,Vulnicura. The virtual-reality trailer is just a short teaser, but it’s a fascinating look inside the Icelandic musician’s latest cutting-edge endeavor, composed of digital Icelandic landscape scans, glowing tendrils of color and motion capture images of Björk herself.
"Family," directed by Andrew Thomas Huang, will premiere in its entirety as part of a much larger multi-media exhibit presented by Red Bull Music Academy and Phi titled Björk Digital. The exhibition centers around Vulnerica and will consist of several VR experiences, video screenings, and hands-on educational spaces, all on display at the DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art from October 15 to November 12. In honor of the project's debut, Bjork is scheduled to perform DJ sets during RBMA Montreal.
"Family for me is the centre piece of the Vulnicura VR album and I am so thrilled to complete this with Andy and James. We tried to capture with virtual reality the metaphysical journey of healing of a heartwound and hope the audience will be able to experience it with us!” Björk said in a statement to the DHC.
This is also not the first video Björk has released for this special project. "Stonemilker VR", "Black Lake", "Mouth Mantra VR", and "Quicksand VR" will be the other films included in the VR-focused program.
In today's world, virtual reality continues to be uncharted territory for a lot of musicians, filmmakers, and artists, so it’ll be interesting to see how Bjork uses this technological innovation to guide visitors through her latest album. Strange, glitchy songs and Icelandic landscapes galore, Björk knows how to keep the art world on its toes. Watch the trailer below:
